Chloe King's Alyssa Diaz Is All About The Martial Arts!

On The Nine Lives of Chloe King, Alyssa Diaz plays the heroic and contemplative Jasmine, a Mai teenager determined to protect Chloe. We’ve seen Jasmine stomp down on villains numerous times throughout season 1 (ahem, remember how she took down the scarfaced creep?!) but we didn’t know that Alyssa herself is also into martial arts!

Check out what she told Pop Culture Passionistas about her kick-ass hobby:

1.) “I’ve been training in martial arts for almost a decade… so it’s come in handy. A lot of projects that come my way involve some type of martial arts or action. So it’s really a blessing to get this opportunity to play Jasmine and work in the show Nine Lives because I and get to utilize my other talents.”

2.) “I love Bruce Lee. I’m a big martial arts fan of Bruce Lee and Tony Jaa who did Ong-Bak. And I love Angelina Jolie. There’s just something about her that’s so fantastic. Milla Jovovich is fantastic. Just somebody that carries that raw energy and brings it to the screen is fantastic. I’m always fascinated watching them.”

We love how Alyssa is into such a tough sport – it explains why Jasmine’s able to handle any danger that comes her way!

Alyssa loves Bruce Lee movies —which martial arts movies are YOUR faves? Tell us in the comments and let us know what you think about the hardcore fight scenes on Chloe King!

The fight scenes for this show are terrible, and the editing is done all crazy/cuts and shaky-cam style to try to try to obscure that…but that’s to be expected for a cast with no physical abilities (other than just looking pretty) or martial arts background (unlike a similar show with vastly superior fight scenes: Buffy The Vampire Slayer). Seriously, cast calls need better standards for shows about cat-folk. Maybe those with gymnast and martial artists/tricking backgrounds only. Every mai in this show moves like a dainty “eww, no touchee” girly girl rather than a sleek predator in human skin.
